AI for kids: what makes an AI safe for a child?
A guide from Team Sesi AI · 21 October 2026
Children are curious, and many already talk to AI on a parent's phone. But most AI chatbots were made for grown-ups: they answer anything, in grown-up words, and they're built for people aged 13 or older. An AI for kids should be different from the ground up. Here is what to look for, and how Sesi does each part.
1. It talks at your child's level
A 4-year-old and a 12-year-old need very different answers. A good AI for kids changes its words, sentence length and examples to the child's age, without changing its safety rules. Sesi asks a grown-up for the child's class once, then talks in tiny words for little ones and gives real explanations to older kids.
2. Every message is checked, both ways
Safety can't depend on a list of banned words. "What is smoke?" is curiosity; "smoke is coming from the kitchen" is an emergency. Sesi reads what a child means. Every message goes through four steps: personal details are removed, the message is understood by meaning, the AI answers with Sesi's child-first rules, and the answer is checked again before your child hears it. If a child is scared, sad or in danger, Sesi responds with comfort and tells them to find a grown-up they trust.
3. Parents stay in control
- Settings, the camera and payments are locked behind a parent PIN.
- A daily time limit, so AI time stays a small, healthy part of the day.
- A safety log on the device that shows any worrying moments.
- A weekly email with what your child did: days, minutes, homework, stories, English practice. Never their chats.
4. It helps them learn, not copy
An AI that hands over homework answers teaches children to copy. Sesi gives one hint at a time and lets the child find the answer, then cheers them on. (More about this: homework help that teaches.)
5. Privacy is the default
Chats stay on your phone and delete themselves after 30 days. The camera is off by default; if a parent turns it on, it only reads a feeling on the device and no picture ever leaves it. There are no ads.
What parents should still do
No AI is 100% safe, and we never claim it. Try it with your child first, sit with them the first few times, set a daily limit, and talk about what they asked. A kind AI works best as a helper next to you, not instead of you.

Is there an AI made just for kids?
Yes. Sesi is an AI buddy made specifically for children aged 3 to 12, with a 13+ mode for teens. It talks at the child's level, helps with homework one hint at a time, tells stories and plays learning games, and checks every message for safety.
What age is Sesi for?
Ages 3 to 12, with a 13+ mode. A grown-up picks the child's class, and Sesi changes how it talks. The safety rules are the same at every age.
Does it work without the camera?
Yes. The camera is off by default and Sesi works fully without it.
